High Grade Buck Skin was obtained first from South American deer and later from US deer by a special tanning process. It is a very fine grained leather specially produced for the piano industry from about 1860 to 1960 by a family in upper New York State. We were able to scoop up some skins from an old inventory still in possession of the family. This buck skin was used in the finest pianos. We have sorted this buck skin by thickness. It is sold by the sqft and also in smaller quantities. There is more variation in thickness on the material sold by the sqft than in the smaller pieces.
Medium Buck Skin - is between 1.7 5mm and 2.25 mm thick. It comes is firm and soft. The firm buck skin is firmer than most of the rest of buck skin. It is firm enough for use as beak leather. Colors are gold to olive tan.
Medium Thin Buck Skin - is between 1.25 mm and 1.75 mm thick. It comes is firm and soft. The firm buck skin is firmer than most of the rest of buck skin. It is firm enough for use as beak leather. Colors are gold to olive tan.
